On Aisle 8 there's a darling, little space filled with wonderful handmade goodness... Crafty Reader Designs. Artist Danica Fowler creates beautiful wreaths, topiaries, figures, and more from the pages of favorite works of literature.
WM: The first question is the most obvious but let's get it out of the way... What's your favorite book?
Danica: I have more than one favorite book, but if I had to pick it would be Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It is a romance with a mystery woven in to keep you enthralled. I love that the main character is a strong woman who decides her fate under difficult circumstances. She stays true to herself and her beliefs.
WM: No one can argue reading is important. What are the top reasons you think so?
Danica: For me, reading gives me a break from daily life and lets me escape for a bit. It's like meeting new people and getting to know them for a while. I also think reading helps with vocabulary and spelling. It can introduce you to different cultures and help you learn about different periods in time in a fun way. What is there not to like about reading?
WM: What do you hope your pieces will inspire in people?
Danica: Well, I certainly hope someone might decide to read more, but definitely to realize that they can sit down and create something from whatever it is in their life that they love.
WM: We love the idea of ordering a custom design made from our favorite book. Tell us about some of the custom orders you have made and the occasions they marked.
Danica: I've made an owl and jewelry for a family I met at a craft show from the Harry Potter books for Christmas presents. Combining a favorite sport with a favorite book, a dear friend asked me to make a bicycle from The Book of Tao for a special birthday gift.
